Long span shelving is a heavy-duty, boltless shelving system built for items too bulky or heavy for standard slotted angle shelving, but that don’t need full pallet racking. Steel beams and adjustable shelf levels handle substantial loads while staying easy to reconfigure as your stock changes.
Absolute Storage Systems supplies and installs long span shelving across Victoria, sized to your load weights and storage layout.

Long span shelving consists of steel upright frames with adjustable horizontal beams, supporting shelf decks in timber, steel or wire mesh. It sits between standard slotted angle shelving and full pallet racking, suited to bulkier cartons, parts and stock that need more support than lightweight shelving but don’t require a forklift-accessed pallet position.
Long span shelving needs to be configured around the actual weight and shape of what you’re storing, not just the available floor space. Absolute Storage Systems has supplied and installed shelving solutions for Victorian warehouses since 1991.
We assess your stock types, weights and storage layout to confirm long span shelving is the right fit.
We design beam spacing, shelf material and unit dimensions around your specific stock and space.
Professionally installed and adjusted to fit your warehouse or storage area from day one.
We check shelf locking, frame stability and load distribution before handover.
We provide maintenance and reconfiguration support as your stock or layout needs change.
Bulkier cartons, parts and general stock need a shelving system that can handle real weight without the cost of full pallet racking. Long span shelving fills that gap, giving you sturdy, organised storage that’s simple to adjust over time.
If your stock is too heavy or bulky for standard shelving but doesn’t need a full pallet position, long span shelving is likely the right fit. Our team can assess your current setup or design a new system from scratch, contact us to get started.
Long span shelving, also written longspan shelving, is hand loaded steel shelving for bulky cartons, parts and loose stock that is too heavy for light duty shelving but does not warrant a pallet position. It is the usual choice for spare parts, trade counters, e-commerce picking, archive and workshop storage, where stock is picked by hand rather than moved by forklift.
Long span shelving is designed for hand loading, with shelf levels sized for cartons and loose items a person can lift. Pallet racking is engineered for forklift loading of full pallets and carries far heavier loads per level. The two are often used together, with pallet racking for bulk stock and long span shelving for the picking and parts areas.
Capacity is quoted as a uniformly distributed load per shelf level and depends on the beam length and shelf construction. Typical ranges run from around 300kg to 450kg per level depending whether you are using particle board with board supports or mesh decks / steel shelving.
Shelf decks are usually timber, steel or wire mesh. Timber is the general purpose option, steel suits heavier or oily stock and wet areas, and wire mesh is used where sprinkler coverage, airflow or visibility through the shelf matters. Deck choice affects the load rating, so it is specified along with the beam layout rather than chosen afterwards.
They overlap but are not identical. Long span shelving describes the size and duty of the system: long beam spans, hand loaded, medium to heavy stock. Boltless describes the assembly method, where beams clip into the uprights without fasteners. Most long span shelving sold in Australia is boltless, but there are bolted long span systems as well.
Yes, when it is in stock. Used and second hand long span shelving comes up regularly through warehouse clearances and relocations and is inspected for frame and beam condition before resale. Because stock moves, it is worth asking what is currently available rather than assuming.
As per the Australian Standard (AS4084:2023), pallet racking audits are now mandatory and must be completed every 12 months.
