Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking stores long, bulky or irregularly shaped items that standard pallet racking can’t handle, timber, steel, pipe, sheet metal and similar loads that don’t sit neatly on a pallet. Open-fronted arms extend from a central upright, so there’s nothing blocking access from the front or side.

Absolute Storage Systems designs and installs cantilever racking across Australia, configured to your load lengths, weights and site conditions, indoors or outdoors.

Overview

What Is Cantilever Racking?

Cantilever racking consists of vertical uprights with horizontal arms extending outward, supported by a base for stability. Unlike pallet racking, there are no front-facing posts, so long or oversized items can be loaded and unloaded from the side without obstruction.

Arm length, spacing and load rating are configured around what you’re storing, timber and pipe need different support intervals than steel bar or sheet stock. It is the right system whenever your load doesn’t sit on a standard pallet footprint.

This makes it the right system when product variety is high or stock turns over frequently. Businesses storing large volumes of a single product line, where maximum density matters more than individual access, are usually better suited to drive-in or double deep racking instead.

Built for Businesses Like Yours

Long, bulky or irregularly shaped stock creates real handling problems when there’s no system built for it. Cantilever racking gives that stock a proper home, off the floor, organised, and easy to access from either side.

  • Stores what pallet racking can’t – Built for timber, pipe, steel bar, sheet metal and similar loads that don’t fit a standard pallet.
  • Unobstructed loading – No front posts means forklifts, cranes or manual handling can access stock from either side without obstruction.
  • Adjustable to your stock – Arm height and spacing can be reconfigured as load sizes change.
  • Increase usable space – Makes proper use of vertical space instead of stacking long items on the floor.
  • Maintain a safe environment – Correctly engineered and installed racking keeps heavy, awkward loads secure and stable.

Why choose us

Cantilever racking has to be engineered around the actual load, not just the floor space. Get the arm spacing or load rating wrong and you end up with a system that can’t safely hold what it was built for. Absolute Storage Systems has been specifying and installing cantilever racking since 1991.

  • Configured to your load – Arm length, spacing and load capacity are designed around the specific items you’re storing.
  • AS4084:2023 compliant – All systems supplied and installed in line with current Australian racking standards.
  • Indoor or outdoor options – Galvanised finishes available for exposed or outdoor storage areas.
  • Supply, install and support – One team handles design, supply, installation and ongoing inspections.
  • Award-winning supplier relationships – Seven-time “Distributor of the Year” recognition reflects the strength of the brands and components behind every system we install.

How it works

Step One: Consultation

We assess your load types, lengths, weights and site conditions to confirm cantilever racking is the right fit.

Step Two: Custom Design

We design arm length, spacing and load ratings around your specific stock and site layout.

Step Three: Installation

Professionally installed in line with AS4084:2023, ready to load from day one.

Step Four: Testing & Compliance

We check arm locking, upright stability and load signage before handover.

Step Five: Ongoing Support

We provide racking audits, maintenance and reconfiguration as your stock or site needs change.

FAQs

What is cantilever racking used for?

Cantilever racking is designed to store long, bulky, or awkwardly shaped items that are difficult to store on standard pallet racking. It is commonly used for timber, steel, pipes, furniture, plasterboard, and other oversized materials.

Cantilever racking is suitable for a wide range of products, including timber packs, steel sections, tubing, pipes, sheet materials, furniture, and building supplies. The open-front design makes it easy to load and unload items of varying lengths.

The load capacity depends on the design of the system, including the column size, arm length, and overall configuration. Light-duty systems may support several hundred kilograms per arm, while heavy-duty cantilever racking can accommodate significantly heavier loads. A storage specialist can recommend the right solution based on your requirements.

There is no fixed maximum length. Cantilever racking is specifically designed for long products and can be configured to safely store materials of varying lengths. The ideal setup will depend on the weight, dimensions, and handling requirements of your products.

Yes. Galvanised cantilever racking is commonly used in outdoor storage yards and industrial environments. It provides a durable storage solution that can withstand exposure to weather conditions while helping protect against corrosion.

Unlike pallet racking, cantilever racking has no front uprights, providing clear access to stored materials. This makes it easier to store and retrieve long or irregularly shaped items while maximising usable storage space.

Absolutely. Cantilever racking can be customised with different column heights, arm lengths, load capacities, and configurations to suit your available space and the products you need to store.

Yes. Many cantilever racking systems are designed to be modular, allowing additional bays or components to be added as your storage requirements grow.
