Mobile Racking

Mobile racking mounts standard pallet racking onto motorised bases that move along floor tracks. By eliminating fixed aisles and replacing them with a single shared access aisle that opens on demand, mobile racking delivers the highest storage density of any racking system available.

It’s suited to operations where floor space is extremely limited, or where cold storage costs make minimising refrigerated volume critical. Absolute Storage Systems designs and installs mobile racking across Victoria, configured to your floor loading, forklift type and stock profile.

Overview

What Is Mobile Racking?

Mobile racking uses the same selective racking frames and beams you’d find in a standard system, mounted on motorised bases that run along rails embedded in the floor. The bases move electrically, creating a single access aisle between whichever two rows you need to work in. All other rows remain closed, eliminating dead aisle space across the rest of the system.

The result is significantly more pallet positions in the same floor area compared to fixed racking. The trade-off is access speed: only one aisle can be open at a time, so it suits operations where throughput allows for sequential access rather than simultaneous picking in multiple aisles. Floor loading requirements also need to be assessed before installation, since the combined weight of bases, racking and pallets is substantially higher than a standard racking system.

Why choose us

Mobile racking involves more complex installation than standard racking, floor track embedding, electrical base installation and load calculations all need to be right before a single pallet goes in.

  • Floor loading assessment included – We assess your floor’s load-bearing capacity as part of the design process, not as an afterthought.
  • Configured to your forklift – Aisle width and base travel speed are matched to your specific forklift type and operational requirements.
  • AS4084:2023 compliant – All systems supplied and installed in line with current Australian racking standards.
  • Supply, install and support – One team handles design, supply, installation and ongoing inspections.
  • Award-winning supplier relationships – Seven-time “Distributor of the Year” recognition reflects the strength of the brands and components behind every system we install.

How it works

Step One: Consultation

We assess your floor loading, stock profile, throughput requirements and forklift type to confirm mobile racking is the right fit.

Step Two: Custom Design

We design the base configuration, track layout and racking system around your floor plan and operational needs.

Step Three: Installation

Floor tracks are embedded and bases installed before the racking system is erected and commissioned.

Step Four: Testing & Compliance

We test base movement, safety sensors and racking stability before handover.

Step Five: Ongoing Support

We provide racking audits, maintenance and base servicing as your system ages.

Why Mobile Racking Is Essential for Maximising Warehouse Storage Density

When every square metre of floor space is accounted for and standard racking has already been optimised, mobile racking is the logical next step. It removes the one thing fixed racking can’t: the aisles themselves.

  • Maximum storage density – Eliminating fixed aisles adds significantly more pallet positions compared to any fixed racking configuration.
  • Suited to cold and refrigerated storage – Minimising aisle volume directly reduces the refrigerated space required to store the same number of pallets.
  • Uses standard selective racking components – The racking itself is conventional selective racking, so it’s compatible with standard forklifts and well-understood operationally.
  • Electronically controlled access – Bases move at the touch of a button, with safety sensors that stop movement if anyone enters the aisle.
  • Scalable – Additional bays can be added to an existing mobile system as storage needs grow.

If you’ve maximised your fixed racking and still need more capacity, mobile racking is worth a conversation. Our team can assess your floor, throughput and stock profile, contact us to get started.

FAQs

What is the difference between mobile racking and standard selective racking?

Standard selective racking uses fixed aisles between every row. Mobile racking mounts the same racking on motorised bases, eliminating fixed aisles and creating a single shared aisle that opens between whichever rows you need to access.

Floor tracks need to be embedded during installation, and the floor’s load-bearing capacity needs to be assessed before design. The combined weight of bases, racking and pallets is substantially higher than a standard racking system, so a structural assessment is essential.

Yes, aisle widths are configured to suit your specific forklift type during the design stage.

Yes. Mobile racking operates with a single shared access aisle. This suits operations with sequential picking requirements rather than simultaneous multi-aisle access.
